The name
The town is named for Colonel William Clark Falkner, the 19th-century Ripley railroad builder, novelist and Confederate officer who was the great-grandfather of the novelist William Faulkner. The railroad Colonel Falkner built ran north out of Ripley through this part of the county, and the town that grew along it took his name. More of that history is on the Ripley page.
