Where the name comes from

The community was originally called Chalybeate Springs, for an iron-rich spring found there. Chalybeate means "impregnated with iron," and mineral springs like this one were once believed to have real medicinal value — enough that they drew visitors and, in many Southern towns, supported a resort trade.

The settlement grew out of an earlier community called Jonesborough, founded before 1840, which makes this one of the older continuously settled corners of the county.

Chalybeate is served by the North Tippah School District through Chalybeate Elementary School, which enrolls students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Students continue on to high school elsewhere in the district — see the Walnut and Falkner pages.
